About English Country Dancing …
An English Dance is a social dance to live music that requires no training. Teaching will be provided and experienced dancers are very helpful. You can come by yourself or with others. Dancers usually switch partners for each of the dances, so you generally have someone to dance with. Just bring soft, clean shoes to dance in to preserve the floor (no high heels please). Dress is comfortable and as you like.
Like Contras, English dances are called. Unlike Contras, most English dances are paired with specific tunes (see examples in the Photo Gallery).

From the East
- Take Rt 202 / 4 west, onto I-393 into Concord
- At the light at end of I-393 turn left onto N. Main St
- Proceed straight through 3 traffic lights, past Capital Building, then at next light turn right onto Pleasant Street. Rt 202 / 9
- Follow From Downtown directions
From Downtown
- From Main St go west on Pleasant St (Rt 202 / 9) straight through 3 traffic lights
- climb slight hill
- turn left into Hugh J. Gallen State Office Park.
- Turn right, follow Wheelock Drive, bearing left at Thru Traffic sign and bearing right at fork (toward blue sign for Dept. of Revenue Administration (DRA)).
- When Dept. of Revenue Administration building is straight in front of you, Howard Rec Center is on your right. Parking is next to the DRA building.
From the West
- Take Rt 202 / 9 towards downtown about 1 mile past the Concord hospital turn right into Hugh J. Gallen State Office Park.
- Turn right follow Major Wheelock Drive, bearing left at Thru Traffic sign and bearing right at fork (toward blue sign for Dept. of Revenue Administration).
- When Dept. of Revenue Administration is straight in front of you, Howard Rec Center is on your right but take a left onto Londergan Rd. to find a parking spot.
From I-93
- Exit 14.
- Turn onto Bridge Street toward the downtown area.
- Proceed to the traffic light at Holiday Inn/Prescription Center/TD Bank intersection.
- Turn left onto N. Main Street.
- Proceed past Capitol Building to the next traffic light.
- Turn right onto Pleasant Street. Rt 202 / 9.
- Follow From Downtown directions
From I-89
- Exit 2.
- Turn on Clinton Street (Rt. 13 East).
- Turn left at light onto S. Fruit St (beside Salvation Army).
- Turn right on Ratification Way, follow to 4-way stop.
- Turn right onto Brown Rd.
- At blue EDUCATION sign, note Howard Rec Center on left but turn right onto Londergan Rd. to find a parking spot.
